Chefish is a game about cooking. There’s only 1 catch. You!
Play as a fish out of water in this physics-based culinary challenge. Prepare nutritious breakfasts or hearty feasts, progressing down the menu until you can become a master chef. But be careful, in this kitchen it's cook or be cooked!
Chefish features a kitchen themed sandbox utilising Unreal’s robust physics engine to create an experience somewhere between Gangbeasts and Cooking Mama. Beyond the absurdist premise, the game functions as a series of time trials, where each recipe presents its own set of challenges. Utensils, kitchen layouts and ingredient requirements changing between every level.
Originally inspired by QWOP, the Chefish features a challenging set of controls designed to force you to adapt to piloting a flopping fish through obstacles and hazards.
One side of this steak has been cooked, while the other is still raw.
Chefish features a dynamic cooking system based on vertex paint values, allowing for realistic frying of foods where only surfaces in contact with heat elements will cook. This paint detection method allows for gameplay such as needing to flip burgers or steaks in order to cook on both sides before plating.
Chefish is still in development. You can read all about the dev process, including articles about design decisions, accessibility and more on my Substack!
